EXTRACTIONS & WISDOM TEETH

An extraction is the removal of the tooth from the mouth.

Wisdom teeth are your third molars that generally come into the far back of your mouth during your later teen years. Regarding extractions, there are different sedation options available for you so that you are as comfortable as possible.

When is an extraction indicated?

  • When the tooth cannot be repaired
  • When the tooth has abscessed and the patient has chosen not to do a root canal
  • When another option (implant or bridge) will last longer than saving the tooth
  • When the bone around the tooth has been lost due to gum disease
  • When there is inadequate room for the tooth (wisdom teeth commonly, but can be other teeth too at an orthodontist recommendation)
  • When the tooth is compromising the health of a more important tooth (usually a wisdom tooth compromising a second molar).

How many appointments are necessary?

Usually, only one appointment is necessary. For wisdom teeth, it is best to take them all out (if indicated) at once and before the age of 20 years.
